DDW MUSIC: GEORGE COSBY – MATTHEW LOGAN VASQUEZ
Matthew Logan Vasquez
As he sings on “Personal”, Matthew Logan Vasquez is striking out on his own. Having made his name as the singer of indie outfit Delta Spirit, he’s let himself unleash his full country twang for his solo recordings.
After all, his debut EP Austin is named after his hometown, recorded on the occasion of moving back to Texas from Brooklyn. As with his band before, the music sounds something like an alt-country version of the National, though he’s not afraid to channel Neil Young at times.
George Cosby is one to watch. The London-based singer-songwriter _Human Touch_ EP demonstrates his depth and breadth over the course of three songs, from sparse poetry to lush compositions, that are easily worthy of the National or the Antlers.
The reverb-drenched instrumentation creates the atmosphere, but it is Cosby’s voice with strains of Antony or Patrick Wolf that lingers long in a listener’s memory.
Matthew Logan Vasquez and George Cosby are part of DDW Music: a multi-venue music festival during Dutch Design Week that includes performances by 60 emerging bands. Get your DDW Ticket ( â 17,50).
